Football League First Division 1978/79

The Football League First Division 1979/80 was the 81st season of the highest English football league . It began on August 18, 1979 and ended on May 19, 1980.

Defending champions Liverpool won their twelfth championship two points ahead of Manchester United . All three newly promoted Crystal Palace , Brighton & Hove Albion and Stoke City were able to keep the class; instead, Bristol City , Derby County and the Bolton Wanderers had to go to the Second Division . These three clubs should be replaced in the following season by the three second division promoted Birmingham City , AFC Sunderland and Leicester City .

A total of 498 players were used, with Liverpool having the fewest with 17 and Derby County with 32 the most players in league games. 122 newcomers opposed 114 footballers who last came into play in the 1979/80 season. 31 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

The championship team of Liverpool FC

The following table lists all players who played in a league game for Liverpool FC during the 1979/80 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
