The Football League 1889/90 was the second season of the highest English football league . It began on September 7, 1889 and ended on March 31, 1890.
Preston North End defended last year's title and won the second English championship in the club's history with two points ahead of Everton . From the Football League had to say goodbye after the end of the season of Stoke , which was replaced by AFC Sunderland from the Football Alliance .
A total of 255 players were used, with Accrington FC having the fewest with 17 and Burnley FC having the most players in league games with 26. 109 newcomers opposed 86 footballers who last came into play in the 1889/90 season. 29 players were able to play all 22 league games of their club.
The following table lists all players who played in a league game for Preston North End during the 1889/90 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
The rules of the Football League stipulated that the four worst-placed teams had to stand for re-election at the end of the season. Voting took place at the annual general meeting of the Football League, at which new admissions were also decided. Because of an error in the goal difference of the Bolton Wanderers Aston Villa was originally fourth from last, but was exempt from re-election because the goal quotient was only hundredths of a point worse than the Bolton Wanderers. The following vote ensured that Stoke FC was no longer allowed to play in the Football League in the following season 1890/91, unlike the third and penultimate Notts County and Burnley FC and was replaced by Sunderland AFC .
Sandy Higgins scored five goals for Derby County against Aston Villa on December 28, 1889.
Notts County was the only team to score at least one goal in every game.
