← Football League First Division 1900/01
The Football League First Division 1901/02 was the 14th season of the highest English football league . It began on September 2, 1901 and ended on April 28, 1902.
The AFC Sunderland won three points clear of Everton , the fourth English championship in club history. Of the two climbers Grimsby Town and Small Heath only the club from Grimsby could receive the class. In addition to Small Heath, Manchester City had to go into the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough FC .
A total of 420 players were used, with Notts County and AFC Sunderland with 19 the fewest and Aston Villa with 29 the most players in league games. 145 newcomers opposed 130 footballers who last came into play in the 1901/02 season. 15 players were able to play all 34 league games of their club.

List of goalscorers
The Sunderland AFC championship team
The following table lists all players who were used in a league game for Sunderland AFC during the 1901/02 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
Change of players during the season
Special occurrences
Andy McGuigan scored five goals for Liverpool FC against Stoke FC on January 4, 1902.
