Football League First Division 1954/55

The Football League First Division 1955/56 was the 57th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 20, 1955 and ended on May 2, 1956.

Manchester United won the fourth English championship in the club's history with an eleven point lead over their direct pursuers Blackpool FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers . Both newly promoted Birmingham City and Luton Town could hold the class; instead, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United had to move into the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday .

A total of 522 players were used, with Burnley FC and Preston North End with 20 the fewest and Everton FC and Aston Villa with 27 the most players in league games. 126 newcomers opposed 115 footballers who last came into play in the 1955/56 season. 17 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

    The Manchester United championship team

The following table lists all the players who played for Manchester United in a league game during the 1955/56 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
