Reginald John Berry (born June 1, 1926 in Aldershot , † September 16, 1994 in Farnham ) was an English football player . Berry moved from Birmingham City to Manchester United in 1951, with whom he won three English championships before ending his football career after the crash of British European Airways Flight 609 .

At the age of 31, Berry had to spend two months in a hospital after the plane crash, among other things because of a broken skull, broken jaw, defective pelvis and broken leg. During the treatment on his jaw, all of his teeth also had to be extracted. As a result of these injuries, he was never able to play football again.

When he woke up, he had no memories of the accident as his injuries had produced a mild form of amnesia . A month after he regained consciousness, he learned about the plane crash when he read an article about it in a newspaper.

Berry was a right winger who stood out mainly for his technique and speed. In 277 games for Manchester United, he scored 44 goals. He played regularly in the starting XI in his first six years at Manchester before losing his regular seat to the younger Kenny Morgans . He later ran a sports shop in Farnborough with his brother Peter .

Johnny Berry died in September 1994 at the age of 68 after a brief illness. This made him the first survivor of the plane crash who died of natural causes.

His son Neill published a book in 2007 covering his father's years at Manchester United.
