Albert Joseph Scanlon (born October 10, 1935 in Hulme , Manchester , † December 22, 2009 in Salford , Greater Manchester ) was an English football player .
Career
Scanlon won the FA Youth Cup in 1953 and 1954 with the Manchester United youth team alongside players like Duncan Edwards , Bobby Charlton and Billy Whelan , who would later go down in history as Busby Babes . After he had signed a professional contract in December 1952, he made his league debut against Arsenal on November 20, 1954 under Matt Busby , who consistently relied on his own offspring . The left wing position in the professional team was mostly occupied by the same age David Pegg , so that Scanlon completed fewer than ten missions when winning the championships in 1956 and 1957 and is therefore not counted among the championship team.
A few weeks after he was able to fight for a regular place in the team, he had an accident on February 6, 1958 with the team on the way back from the European Cup quarter-finals against Red Star Belgrade at Munich-Riem Airport . Eight of his teammates were killed when British European Airways Flight 609 slipped off the runway while attempting to take off. Scanlon survived with head injuries and a broken leg and returned to the field for the following season. He played all 42 league games of the 1958/59 season , scored 16 goals and thus contributed to the surprising achievement of second place in the table. His achievements brought the fast winger in the 1958/59 season five appearances in the English U-23 selection and in 1960 one use in a selection game for the Football League . Due to a lack of consistency and falling form, he finally moved in November 1960 for about 18,000 pounds to league rivals Newcastle United , who was trained by Scanlon's uncle Charlie Mittens .
During his time at Newcastle he was in competition with Liam Tuohy , after the dismissal of Mittens in October 1961 Scanlon's time at United was drawing to a close; in February 1962 he was finally given after only 27 missions for a transfer of 2,000 pounds to the third division club Lincoln City . His professional career ended from April 1963 to summer 1966 at Mansfield Town , with whom he achieved promotion to the Third Division shortly after his arrival in 1963 and made a total of 108 league appearances. For a short time he continued his playing career in amateur football at Belper Town , but ended his active career in October 1966 for good.
After his career, Scanlon worked as a dock worker, security guard and warehouse clerk, among other things. In 2004, he and Harry Gregg reported on a radio show on BBC4 that they and other Manchester United players were taking amphetamines regularly during the 1950s . In October 2009 he was admitted to the intensive care unit of Salford Royal Hospital with kidney problems and pneumonia , where he died on December 22, 2009.
