Duncan Edwards (born October 1, 1936 in Dudley , † February 21, 1958 in Munich ) was an English football player .
Athletic career
Edwards was born in Dudley, Central England. When he was eleven years old, a teacher noticed his skills.
He was also noticed at a young age by scouts from Manchester United . He was an ideal fit for coach Matt Busby's concept . At that time he had to build a new team and wanted to use players from his own youth.
He made his debut in the first division in 1953 in a 4-0 loss to Cardiff City . Soon he was irreplaceable for the team. Manchester United played great in the league in the years that followed. In the 1955/56 season they were eleven points ahead of the runner-up champions, more than ever before. Also in the following year, Manchester United was sovereign champion.
In the five years he played in the premier league, he made 175 games and scored 21 goals.
In 1955 he also made his debut in the jersey of the English national football team in the classic against Scotland. By the time he died, he had played 18 games in five goals for England. His use at the 1958 World Cup was also considered to be almost certain.
The plane disaster in Munich
His still young career ended abruptly on February 6, 1958: Manchester United was on board BEA 609 on the return flight from the European Cup match at Red Star Belgrade (3: 3, Manchester had qualified for the semi-finals). Problems were found during the refueling stop in Munich-Riem . On the third attempt to take off, the machine slipped due to the slush on the back of the runway and caught fire. Seven players died.
Edwards was seriously injured and brought to the hospital on the right of the Isar . He had lost a lot of blood and had severe internal bleeding. On February 11th, he fell into a coma. He died on February 21st. His body was later taken to Dudley, where he was also buried. He was buried in the same grave as his sister Carol Anne, who died in 1947 at the age of 14 weeks.
Matt Busby later said there would never be a player like him again. In 2002 he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame .
