Roger William Byrne (born February 8, 1929 in Gorton , † February 6, 1958 in Munich ) was an English football player . Between 1954 and 1957 he played 33 matches for the English national football team . Shortly before his 29th birthday, Byrne died in the British European Airways flight 609 plane crash in Munich, which killed eight Manchester United players .
Athletic career
Byrne signed his first junior contract with Manchester United in 1949. In the first two seasons he was used in the reserve team mostly on the left half position and later as a left winger . After he switched to the professional field in 1951 and made his debut on November 24, 1951 in a 0-0 draw against Liverpool FC in Anfield , he won the English championship in his first season.
In the following season, Byrne was initially withdrawn from coach Matt Busby to the defender position. After a series of defeats, however, Busby reorganized the team and Byrne was again used offensively on the left. He scored seven goals in six games. The following year, Byrne played as a left back and held that position for the rest of his career. His offensive focus was exceptional at a time when the defenders were usually almost exclusively in their own half of the game. His above-average speed and game overview also ensured that Byrne could interpret the full-back position in a modern way.
On April 3, 1954, Byrne made his debut in the final qualifying game for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland for the English national team, defeating Scotland 4-2 in Glasgow . He was then a member of the English squad at the World Cup and was used in all three games.
Byrne was henceforth team captain of Manchester United and won his second and third English championships in 1956 and 1957. At the zenith of his career, Byrne reached the semi-finals with his club in the second participation in the European Cup after a 3: 3 in the second leg at Red Star Belgrade . After the team had made a stopover in Munich to refuel during the return flight from Belgrade , the plane crashed while attempting to take off. Byrne was one of the 23 fatalities of the total of 43 passengers.
