Football League First Division 1955/56

The Football League First Division 1956/57 was the 58th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 18, 1956 and ended on May 1, 1957.

Manchester United won the fifth English championship in the club's history with eight points ahead of their direct pursuers Tottenham Hotspur and Preston North End and defended the title from the previous year. Both promoted Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday could hold the class; instead, Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic had to move into the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted Nottingham Forest and Leicester City .

A total of 536 players were used, with Leeds United with 17 the fewest and Charlton Athletic with 30 the most players in league games. 127 newcomers faced 134 footballers who last came into play in the 1956/57 season. 20 players were able to play all 42 league games of their club.

    The Manchester United championship team

The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Manchester United during the 1956/57 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
