Derek Robert "Tappy" Tapscott (born June 30, 1932 in Barry , † June 12, 2008 in Cardiff ) was a Welsh football player .

The striker began his career with Barry Town in the Southern League . In 1953 he moved to Arsenal for £ 2,750 . Already in his first game in April 1954 against Liverpool he contributed two goals to the 3-0 victory. He was then called up for a World Cup qualifier against Austria for the first time in the squad of the Welsh national team, for which he played 14 games and scored four goals. For the World Cup in Sweden he was not part of the Welsh squad. Tapscott played for Arsenal for five years, scoring 68 goals in 132 Premier League and Cup games. In September 1958 he moved to Cardiff City for £ 10,000 . For the club he played 234 first and second division and cup games and scored 101 goals as the best goalscorer of the time up to 1965. Including two legendary goals for the club: First, the winning goal in a 1-0 win against his former club Arsenal, which he scored by hand. On the other hand, the goal in the second round of the European Cup Winners' Cup against the cup defender Benfica Lisbon . From the far right he did not hit the ball correctly, but the goalkeeper steered it into his own goal. In 1959, 1964 and 1965, Tapscott won the Welsh Cup. In 1965 he left Cardiff for a year at AFC Newport County and then another two years at Cinderford Town .

He ended his active career at the age of 39 and focused on his work as a representative for a sportswear company. In 2004 Tapscott published his autobiography.
