The Barry Town United Football Club is a football club from Barry ( Wales ). The club was founded in 1912 and plays in the Welsh Premier League , the highest tier in Welsh football. The club dominated the League of Wales in the 1990s.

history

The club was founded in November 1912 as Barry AFC. Initially, the club played in the Southern League and became champions in 1921. Two years later the club changed its name to Barry Town. In 1955 the club won the Welsh Cup for the first time. For a long time these were the only successes of the club. In 1982 the club withdrew from the Southern League and moved to the Welsh League. Barry dominated this league at will and was champion five times in a row between 1983 and 1987. In 1989, Barry Town won the sixth championship in seven years and returned to the Southern League. When the League of Wales was founded in 1992 , Barry decided not to participate.

A year later, Barry returned to Wales in the Welsh Football League First Division. There the club was instant champion and also won the cup and the league cup. In addition to the promotion, Barry qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup , where they were eliminated in the first round against FK Žalgiris Vilnius from Lithuania . In 1996 Barry Town, who introduced full profit since 1995, became Welsh champions for the first time. It was the first of seven championship titles in eight years. In the 1996/97 UEFA Cup , the club eliminated FC Dinaburg ( Latvia ) and then Vasutas Budapest ( Hungary ). This qualified Barry Town as the first League of Wales club for the main round of a European Cup competition. In the same season, Barry won the triple . In the summer of 2001, Barry became the first Welsh team to win a UEFA Champions League qualifying game when they defeated Azerbaijani champions FK Şəmkir . In the second round there was a bitter 8-0 defeat at FC Porto . After all, the second leg could be won 3-1.

In the summer of 2003, the association had to file for bankruptcy as a mountain of debt totaling a million pounds sterling had accumulated. President John Fashanu, who had assumed the presidency a year earlier and promised to broadcast Barry Town games on Nigerian television, resigned. In August 2003, players and coaches who had not received a salary since June were denied access to Jenner Park. A new management took over the club and the new team was composed of amateur players. The first victory was not achieved until February 2004. In the end, Barry Town was relegated as the reigning champion. Since the club had arrears with the stadium rental, the club had to move to another stadium. The following season was turbulent. Several coaches came and went. Many disaffected fans turned their backs on the club and became fans of the newly formed Barry FC, which played in a local league.

In the summer of 2006, Barry Town was able to return to Jenner Park after an agreement was reached with the stadium owner regarding the arrears of rent. The club currently plays in the Welsh Football League Division One. A number of fans who have migrated to Barry FC have now returned to Barry Town, while a not to be underestimated number of fans follow both clubs' games.
