The SHAMKIR FC is an Azerbaijani football club from Şəmkir , a town of the same name Rajon .
history
The FK Şəmkir played since the 1995/96 season in the Premyer Liqası , could barely avoid relegation in the first two years and made it to third place in the table in the 1997/98 season.
In the following year they qualified fifth for the championship finals and even became runner-up there. In the same year they stood in Baku in front of around 8,000 spectators in the cup final, but had to admit defeat to Neftçi Baku after a goalless draw at the end of the game with 4-5 on penalties .
The great success came in 2000 when they won the national championship for the first time with an eleven point lead. In the following year, the title defense was successful, as the tied Neftçi Baku had the worse goal difference.
Although they were at the top of the table at the end of the season in 2002, the championship is not recognized by the AFFA, the Azerbaijani association, as several clubs revolted against Fuad Musayev , the association's president, and the championship ended independently of the association on its own account played. The UEFA has denied the recognition and no club allowed to participate in the international competitions. Nevertheless, FK Şəmkir was in the cup final, which was canceled when a penalty was given against the club in the 84th minute and the team had left the field. Final opponent Neftçi Baku was then declared cup winner. In the following year there was no championship at all because of the quarrels between the association and the clubs.
When the league resumed play in the summer of 2003, the club was back among the participating teams and reached the runner-up at the end of the season. On May 9, 2004 they were also in the final of the cup, but could not win it at the third attempt. Again Neftçi Baku won the title with a 1-0 win after extra time. In 2004/05, the club ended the season just two points from a relegation zone, but due to financial problems, the club withdrew before the 2005/06 season and stopped playing.
The club has now been reorganized and has been playing in the second Azerbaijani league again since the 2010/11 season .

The club plays its home games in the Sähär Stadium . This multi-purpose stadium can seat around 11,500 spectators.
