The Estádio José Alvalade XXI in Lisbon

The 2004/05 UEFA Cup was the 34th edition of the competition, in which 96 clubs from 51 national associations participated. With CSKA Moscow, a Russian club team won a title for the first time in the history of the European Cup. The final was held in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, at the Estádio José Alvalade XXI , the home stadium of the defeated finalist Sporting Lisbon .
mode
All clubs that had occupied one of the UEFA Cup places regulated by the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of the previous season were eligible to participate . As in the previous year, three clubs qualified for the first round via the UEFA Intertoto Cup . In the event of a tie, the number of goals scored away decided first , followed by an extension. If no decision was reached after two 15 minutes, a penalty shoot-out followed until the winner was determined. This season, for the first time, a group stage was inserted in which five teams in eight groups each determined three participants for the sixteenth-finals, in which the eight thirds of the Champions League group stage also took part.

1 The first leg was postponed to September 22, 2004 (due to the Maccabi Tel-Aviv game against FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League). But the game was canceled because of a strike at Tel Aviv airport. The game was only decided by the game in Heerenveen.
