The FK Voždovac (full official name in Serbian : Фудбалски клуб Вождовац, Fudbalski klub Voždovac , German : Football Club Voždovac) - also known as Voždovac or Zmajevi (German translation: "The Dragons") - is a central Serbian part of the Duklubovac district situated Belgrade district of Voždovac , in the Super League play, the highest league in the Serbian football .

Founded in 1912, the capital city club spent the first decades of its existence in the amateur field . At the time of Yugoslavia Voždovac played mainly in the lower leagues and only caused a stir in the 1963/64 season when they rose to the 2nd Yugoslav league. There the club was able to hold for a few years, but continued to play in the lower divisions of the country for several decades.

It wasn't until 2005 that Voždovac first became first class and already reached 3rd place in its debut season, which is the club's greatest success to this day. The club plays its home games in the Voždovac stadium , a unique property, especially because the stadium is located on the roof of a shopping center called Stadion Shopping Center , which is also located in the Dušanovac district. As the first structure of its kind in Europe , this building complex is a new and sought-after tourist attraction in the Serbian capital.

history

The Voždovac football club was founded in 1912 under the name FK Dušanovac , named after the Dušanovac district , which was mainly inhabited by working class citizens and is now in the Voždovac district of Belgrade , and changed its name to Voždovački SK as early as 1929 . The club spent the first decades of its existence consistently in the amateur field, but caused a greater stir in 1964 when the Serbian league was won, at that time the 3rd division of the Yugoslav football system, and thus rose to the 2nd division for the first time, where he could hold until 1968.

When the football club Sloboda Belgrade was dissolved in 1973 , the local city authority decided to hand over its property to Voždovački SK , who then changed its name to FK Voždovac. The first success under his new name was winning the Belgrade City Cup in 1975, but the club continued to spend the following three decades in the country's lower leagues. This was only to change in 2004, when Voždovac won the Serbian League Belgrade , one of the four sections of the 3rd Serbian League , and thus rose to the 2nd division without a single defeat .

On June 18, 2005, there was a merger with the first division club Železnik Belgrade , which had to withdraw from the top division due to financial problems . The club thus played in the first division for the first time in the 2005/06 season and surprisingly reached third place in its debut season. For financial reasons, however, Voždovac had to withdraw his participation in qualifying for the 2006/07 UEFA Cup and thus missed the first-time participation in the UEFA Cup . As surprising as the 3rd place was, the following relegation was also surprising, because at the end of the 2006/07 season the club finished only the penultimate place despite the 10 goals by striker Nikola Đurđić , which led to the club's relegation to the 2nd division led. At times the club only played in the 3rd division, but managed to return to the 2nd division as champions of the 2011/12 season. During the 2012/13 season they just missed promotion to the first division as third, but since long-time first division club Hajduk Kula withdrew from the elite for financial reasons, the Serbian Football Association decided to promote Voždovac to third place in the SuperLiga .

Stadion

The club's home stadium is the Voždovac Stadium, which is located in the Voždovac district and has a capacity of 5,200 spectators. The newly built stadium, which opened in 2013, is a unique structure , mainly because it is located on the roof of a modern shopping center . A total of 50 million euros was invested in the construction of the building complex , the special construction technology of which was used for the first time in Serbia . The old stadium of the club, which was built in 1912 and demolished in 2011, was previously located on the area on which the property was built. The current stadium was built in accordance with UEFA's economic, social and environmental standards and is located approximately 40 meters above the surface of the earth . In September 2012, the German company Polytan equipped the playing field with the most modern artificial turf , the LigaTurf RS Pro CoolPlus . As the first building of this kind in Europe , the shopping center or stadium Voždovac is a new and coveted tourist attraction of the Serbian metropolis .
