João Filipe Iria Santos Moutinho (born September 8, 1986 in Portimão ) is a Portuguese soccer player who plays for the Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Portuguese national soccer team.

Moutinho comes from a family of athletes. His father himself was a soccer player for 15 years and his mother was a runner. His older brother and cousin are also soccer players.

Moutinho made his debut in the 2004/05 season. His appearance against Feyenoord Rotterdam and Newcastle United made him known for the first time in Europe , and he is also one of the most popular young players among Sporting fans. There is even a song dedicated to him ("Ele é o 28, ele é baixinho, João Moutinho, João Moutinho" - he's number 28, he's small ... João Moutinho, João Moutinho!).

The youngster played for Sporting Lisbon until the summer of 2010 . For the 2010/11 season, Moutinho moved to FC Porto for eleven million euros plus Nuno Coelho , where he received a contract until 2015. Sporting has a 25% share in a resale. Thus, the highest transfer fee ever within Portugal was paid for him.

For the 2013/14 season Moutinho moved together with James Rodríguez to the French Ligue 1 for AS Monaco . He signed a contract until June 30, 2018 and cost 25 million euros in transfer.

For the 2018/19 season, Moutinho moved to the English Premier League for Wolverhampton Wanderers .

National team

On August 17, 2005, at the age of 18, he made his debut for the Portuguese national team against Egypt . After he took in 2008 , 2012 and 2016 at the European Championship and 2014 and 2018 at the World Cup in part.

At the EM 2016, Moutinho started in all three group matches. In the round of 16 against Croatia, he was then not used. In the remaining tournament games he was substituted on. In the quarter-finals against Poland, he was one of the successful shooters on penalties, which was won 5-3. In the extension of the final against France, he gave the template for Éders winning goal. Portugal then won the European Championship for the first time.

On June 24, 2017, he made his 100th international appearance in the final group match of the FIFA Confederations Cup, as the fifth Portuguese after Luís Figo , Fernando Couto , Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani .

In an award show at the end of 2005, Moutinho was named "Rookie of the Year" and "Best Midfielder" in Portugal in a survey of newspapers from different countries.
