João Mário , full name João Mário Naval da Costa Eduardo (born January 19, 1993 in Porto ), is a Portuguese football player .
Career
In the club
João Mário played as a teenager in his hometown for FC Porto before he was trained in the youth academy of Sporting Lisbon from 2004 . On December 14, 2011, he made his professional debut as a substitute in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League in a 2-0 defeat by Lazio . In the 2012/13 season he was still mainly used in the club's B team. On February 10, 2013, however, he was first used in the Primeira League . After he had not been able to collect any more playing times in the A-squad in the preliminary round of the 2013/14 season , he moved to the second half of the season on loan to first division rivals Vitória Setúbal . There he was immediately a regular player and played 15 league games. He returned to Sporting for the 2014/15 season .
For the 2016/17 season , João Mário moved to Serie A for Inter Milan .
On January 26, 2018, the club announced João Mario's loan to West Ham United .
In the national team
João Mário has played over 70 international matches for Portugal's junior national teams. He took part in the U-17 European Championship in 2010 , the U-19 European Championship in 2012 , the U-21 European Championship in 2015 and the Toulon Tournament and the U-20 World Championship in 2013 . On October 11, 2014 he made his debut under national coach Fernando Santos in a friendly against France in the senior team .
He was part of the Portuguese squad at the 2016 European Championship . Except for the second group game against Austria, in which he was only substituted in the closing stages, he was always in the starting line-up. He was one of five players in the squad who were used in all seven tournament games. The team reached the final and became European champions for the first time with a 1-0 win after extra time against hosts France.
