The 19th FIFA U-20 World Cup (formerly known as the Junior World Cup ) took place from June 21 to July 13, 2013 in Turkey .

The World Cup games were played in the following seven cities.

qualification

24 teams compete in the finals, with 23 places awarded at the individual U-19 continental championships. Host Turkey is automatically qualified for the finals.

The European association UEFA has six starting places. These were awarded at the 2012 U-19 European Championship , which took place in Estonia from July 3 to 15 . England, France, Greece, Croatia, Portugal and Spain qualified. It is the first time for Greece to participate. The hosts, Estonia and Serbia, did not make it into the top six as the bottom of the group.

The Asian Football Association AFC has four starting places. The U-19 Asian Cup 2012 , which was held in the United Arab Emirates from November 2 to 17, 2012, served as the qualifying tournament .

Four teams from CONCACAF , the football association of North America and the Caribbean, qualified. The 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship served as the qualifying tournament . It was held from February 18 to March 2, 2013 in Mexico . El Salvador and Cuba were able to qualify for the first time.

The African Football Association CAF has four starting places at this World Cup. The 2013 U-20 African Cup of Nations , which took place in Algeria from March 16-30, 2013 , served as the qualifying tournament .

Four teams from the South American association CONMEBOL qualified. The main tournament, the 2013 U-20 South American Championship , took place in Argentina from January 9 to February 3, 2013 .

The Oceania Football Confederation identified its participant in the U-20 Oceania Football Championship . The tournament was held from March 17th to 30th in Lautoka ( Fiji ).

Preliminary round

The groups were drawn on March 25, 2013 in Istanbul and resulted in the following groups: The second, third and fourth placed in the Africa Championship were drawn in a separate draw on March 30. The preliminary round was held in six groups of four teams each. The six group winners and runners-up as well as the four best thirds in the group qualified for the round of 16.

Note:
* At the beginning of July 2013, the two referees from Cameroon had to cease their refereeing activities, as the Cameroonian Football Association had been suspended by the world association FIFA . The reason for this was that Cameroonian politics interfered in the association's affairs through the use of law enforcement officers in the election of the association's president Iya Mohammed on June 19 .

Technical aids

The so-called " free kick spray " is being used for the first time at a FIFA competition . With this, in South America for several years, z. B. means used at the Copa América 2011 , the referee can mark the location of the free kick and the position of the wall.
