The 7th U-17 World Cup took place in Egypt from September 4th to 21st, 1997 . The defending champion was the national team of Ghana , the new title holder was the national team of Brazil .

The teams of the DFB and the ÖFB were able to qualify for the tournament. However, while the Austrians were over after the preliminary round, in which they had no win and only scored one goal, the German selection was only eliminated in the semifinals against eventual world champions Brazil with a 4-0 draw. She also lost the game for third place.
