Paul Josef Herbert Scharner (born March 11, 1980 in Scheibbs , Lower Austria ) is a former Austrian soccer player who has played as an amateur for the Lower Austrian fifth division club SC Melk since January 2019 .
Career
Scharner spent his childhood and youth in Purgstall / Erlauf and played there for the first time in a soccer team at the local SVG Purgstall. After five years in the federal youth centers in St. Pölten and Vienna , he made his debut in the Austrian Bundesliga on April 24, 1999 in the 3-0 home win of his club at the time, FK Austria Wien against SV Ried . At Wiener Austria, Paul Scharner rose to national team; he made his debut on April 17, 2002 in the starting lineup against Cameroon. In the 2002/03 season he was able to become Austrian champions with Austria and also win the ÖFB Cup and earn a regular place in central defense in the national team.
On October 19, 2003 there was a falling out with coach Joachim Loew when he refused to be substituted on, despite the 0-1 deficit in the game against Grazer AK , because he was not allowed to play in his original position. Paul Scharner was then dismissed and moved to league rivals SV Austria Salzburg and finally to the Norwegian club Brann Bergen . In 2005 he was voted Player of the Year by the fans in Bergen and won a title in 2004 by beating Lyn Oslo in the Norwegian Cup . With the move to Norway, Paul Scharner's involvement in the national team ended for the time being, but he was allowed to play again for the ÖFB in October 2005 in the game against England.
On December 22, 2005 he signed a contract for three and a half years with Wigan Athletic and moved to the English Premier League club for a transfer fee of 3.67 million euros . He made a “dream debut” at his club when he scored the 1-0 winning goal against Arsenal in the Carling Cup on his debut on January 10, 2006 . He scored his first championship goal for Wigan on January 31, 2006 against Everton FC in the 45th minute of the game. He is the second Austrian to score in the Premier League. Emanuel Pogatetz hit him a few minutes earlier on the same day. Although Paul Scharner was able to establish himself as a regular player in the Premier League, team boss Josef Hickersberger declared on August 24, 2006 that he no longer wanted to be called up for the national team. This was preceded by a phone call in which Scharner had criticized "the unprofessional structures at the ÖFB ".
After Karel Brückner took over the position of team boss, Scharner was nominated for the friendly match against Italy on August 20, 2008, in which he came for the first time after two years.
After he moved to league rivals West Bromwich Albion in 2010 , he became a regular there too. At the beginning of August 2012, Scharner moved to the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV . He signed a two-year contract with the Hamburgers and was numbered 20.
Shortly before the friendly against Turkey on August 15, 2012, Scharner left the training camp of the Austrian national team after a dispute with team boss Marcel Koller . Scharner had demanded a regular place for the game against Turkey, but was put on the bench by Koller. After an interview with the magazine "News", in which Scharner criticized the national coach negatively and portrayed him as a sidekick of the ÖFB, he was banned from all international matches for life by the ÖFB presidium.
At the end of January 2013, Scharner moved to his former club Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the 2012/13 season and won the FA Cup . In August 2013, his contract with HSV was terminated. On September 1, 2013, he ended his active football career.
In January 2019, the Lower Austrian fifth division club SC Melk announced that Scharner would strengthen the team for the second half of the season.
Others
Scharner graduated from the technical college for electrical engineering at the HTL Hollabrunn in 1999 and is active in the real estate business after his football career.
In August 2015 he published his autobiography Position Querdenker: How Much Character Can a Football Career Take?
In addition, he works as a columnist for the daily newspaper Kurier and as a TV expert in the program Sport & Talk in Hangar-7 on Servus TV .
