Marcel Koller (born November 11, 1960 in Zurich ) is a Swiss football coach and former football player .

Career

Player career

The midfielder Koller played his entire career as a player at Grasshopper Club Zurich . With the club he won seven championships and five times the cup. He signed his first professional contract at the age of 18 and was appointed to the first team for the 1980/81 season. He was a team captain for a long time and often played in the position of the six .

He played 55 international matches for the Swiss national football team . The conclusion and at the same time the highlight was the participation in the European Football Championship in 1996 .

Coaching career

Associations in Switzerland

Koller made his coaching debut on July 1, 1997 at FC Wil in the 1997/98 season in the Swiss NLB . When the club was on a promotion position in January 1999, he moved to FC St. Gallen in the NLA . In St. Gallen, he scored the first successes as a coach in the top league: In the 1999/2000 season, FC St. Gallen for the first time since 1904 was Swiss , and the club defeated in the UEFA Cup to Chelsea . Koller was named Swiss Coach of the Year 1999.

On January 9, 2002, he moved to the club where he had spent his career as an active player, the Grasshoppers Zurich. There he won the Swiss championship again in 2003 . After five defeats in a row, most recently against his former club FC Wil, he resigned on October 3, 2003.

Associations in Germany

Immediately after his work in Zurich, Koller moved to Germany : From November 2, 2003 to June 14, 2004 he was head coach at 1. FC Cologne in the Bundesliga . He is considered to be the discoverer of the German national player Lukas Podolski . However, Koller went down with the club in the 2nd Bundesliga and was on leave after the season.

From May 23, 2005 he was the coach of VfL Bochum . After a season in the 2nd Bundesliga, VfL was mathematically determined to have been promoted to the Bundesliga on April 17, 2006, five game days before the end of the season. On May 5, 2007, VfL Bochum secured relegation in the Bundesliga with an away win against Hamburger SV two game days before the end of the 2006/07 season. Koller reached eighth place in the table with VfL Bochum in the 2006/07 season, which was VfL Bochum's third-best position in the Bundesliga. With Koller, VfL Bochum played in the top division for three seasons in a row. Nevertheless, VfL Bochum parted ways with Koller at the beginning of the fourth season on September 20, 2009. At the end of the 2009/10 season, VfL was relegated back to the 2nd Bundesliga.

National coach

On November 1, 2011, Koller became the ÖFB team manager as the successor to interim coach Willibald Ruttensteiner . The appointment of Koller as the new team boss was criticized by former Austrian national players. Others were neutral to positive. The national team then recorded a clear upward trend, but failed in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as third in the group.

Koller was associated with clubs in Switzerland and Germany towards the end of World Cup qualification. In addition, the Swiss Football Association offered him the post of national coach for Switzerland. In the end, he extended his contract with the ÖFB for two years. Shortly before the contract was extended, Wolfgang Fellner accused Koller of treason in the daily newspaper “ Österreich ” and asked the ÖFB to send him a “Packerl to the Swiss”. The entire ÖFB-Elf stood in solidarity with Koller with an open letter.

After a 4-1 win over Sweden, the team with Koller qualified as group winners for the European Championship 2016 on September 8, 2015 , for the first time ever in a sporting way. The national team was in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings for the first time . When the Austrian Sportsman of the Year 2015 was honored, the national team was named Team of the Year ; Koller himself received the Special Award .

Koller's contract with the ÖFB ran until December 31, 2017, and in the case of successful qualification for the World Cup in Russia until 2018. In September 2017, the ÖFB decided that no extension of Koller's contract would be sought. On October 30, 2017, the ÖFB announced that Koller will be replaced by Franco Foda from January 1, 2018 . Koller was on leave from November 2017, which is why Franco Foda, thanks to the courtesy of SK Sturm Graz, already looked after the national team in the friendly against Uruguay (2: 1) on November 14, 2017.

FC Basel

On August 2, 2018, Koller became head coach of FC Basel , which he will leave by mutual agreement at the end of August 2020.
