Branko Elsner
Branko Elsner (born November 23, 1929 in Ljubljana ; † November 17, 2012 ibid) was a Yugoslav and Slovenian sports educator and football coach , who gained notoriety as the two-time Austrian team boss .
Career
Branko Elsner celebrated his first successes as a football coach in his Slovenian homeland with NK Olimpija Ljubljana , whom he looked after from 1964 to 1967. In 1968 he made the jump to Austria, where he reached his peak as a club coach at the beginning of the 1970s with the SSW Innsbruck . With the Innsbruck team, the Slovenian won the championship in 1972 and 1975 , the ÖFB Cup in 1970 and 1975 and the Mitropacup at international level in 1975 and 1976. These successes and his great popularity even led to his 1975, if only temporarily the Austrian national team took over as coach for two European Championship qualifiers. After Béla Guttmann and Leopold Šťastný he was only the third legionnaire on the coaching bench of the Austrian national team.
After the position of the Austrian team boss became vacant in January 1985, ÖFB President Beppo Mauhart decided to go back to the Slovenian. Branko Elsner's assistant on the team was Gustl Starek . The best-known game of the "Elsner team boss" was the 4-1 home win at the reopening of the Prater Stadium over Germany. However, he failed to qualify for the European Championship in 1988 and also failed with his Olympic team, which in 1987 led to Elsner's replacement by Josef Hickersberger , who promptly qualified for the World Cup. More recently, Branko Elsner has worked as a coach at the Japanese first division club Brummel Sendai, among others .
Branko Elsner received his doctorate in 1982 and taught in the 1990s as a professor at the Sports Faculty of the University of Ljubljana .
family
Branko's son Marko (born April 11, 1960), bronze medalist with the Yugoslav team at the 1984 Olympic Games , played for Red Star Belgrade , OGC Nice and Austria , among others .
