NK Olimpija is a Slovenian football club from Ljubljana . The club currently plays in the country's top division, the Slovenska Nogometna Liga .

history

Olimpija was founded as Ilirija in 1911. In 1966 the club rose under its current name to the 1st Yugoslav league . The best placement was seventh place in the 1970/71 season. In the 1969/70 season, Olimpija reached the final of the Yugoslav Cup , but lost to Red Star Belgrade 2-2 and 0-1. 1984 Olimpija had to relegate as table seventeenth. In the 1988/89 season, the team managed to return to the highest Yugoslav division, which the club left in the summer of 1991 in the direction of the newly formed Slovenian league .

From 1992 to 1995 the club won the Slovenian championship four times in a row. In 1992/93, 1995/96, 1999/00 and 2002/03 the team also won the Slovenian Cup.

In 2005 the association was dissolved due to financial problems and then re-established as NK Bežigrad. Bežigrad started in the fifth highest division and rose twice in a row. In the summer of 2007, the club took on the old name NK Olimpija Ljubljana again and rose to the second division at the end of the 2007/08 season. In the 2008/09 season, the club was first in the second division and thus rose again to the highest Slovenian league, in which it still plays today.

In the 2011/12 season there was even a second place, which meant qualifying for the Europa League .
