Zdenko Verdenik (born May 2, 1949 in Ptuj , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian football coach . He is currently without a club.

Career as a coach

Verdenik began his coaching career in his Slovenian homeland with the Yugoslav first division relegated NK Olimpija Ljubljana . But even the then 35-year-old could not prevent the club from relegating for the second time in a row. After a false start in the third division, Verdenik was fired in 1985.

After Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia and the national football association joined UEFA , Verdenik took on the role of coach of the U-21 national team and headed it for a year. In July 1994 he was then head coach of the senior national team . On September 7th, he scored 1-1 in his debut game at the start of the European Championship qualification against Italy . At the end of the group stage, Slovenia finished fifth, leaving only Estonia with no points behind. Aside from the Estonians, they also managed a 3-2 win after a 2-0 deficit against Ukraine . Twelve points separated Verdenik's team after a total of ten games from second place in the relay, which would have entitled to participation in the finals. In the time that followed until the start of the World Cup qualification , the national team remained unbeaten four times in five friendship games. With the 7-1 victory over Iceland in this phase, the highest victory in Verdenik's tenure was achieved. However, the start of the World Cup elimination was disappointing: in the first three games only one point could be won. After the 0: 4 against Denmark on April 30, 1997, Zdenko Verdenik was dismissed.

In May 1998, Dr. Zdenko Verdenik appointed as the new coach of FK Austria Wien . On April 2, 1999, President Dr. Streicher announced that an amicable contract termination with coach Zdenko Verdenik had been agreed. Sports director Friedrich Koncilia and Robert Sara were to lead the training until the end of the season . From June 1999 the new head coach should be Herbert Prohaska . The reasons given for terminating the contract were, on the one hand, the current sporting situation and serious health problems of Verdenik. The Slovene was eliminated with Austria in the first round of the ÖFB Cup and had only achieved nine wins in 25 Bundesliga games, which was not enough to make it to the top of the table. The appearance in the UI Cup had already ended in the first round against the Polish representative Ruch Chorzów .

In 2000 Verdenik moved to Japan , where he signed with the first division club JEF United . His greatest success in three seasons was the runner-up with the club in the first half of 2001. In early 2002, Verdenik replaced the Japanese Tetsuro Miura as coach of Nagoya Grampus Eight . After a sixth and a seventh place in the J-League , the Slovenian moved to Vegalta Sendai . There he had to accept relegation from the J-League. After the direct resurgence failed, Verdenik left the club.

On July 1, 2010 Verdenik took over the second division club Interblock Ljubljana in his Slovenian homeland after a break of several years . He led Interblock to second place in the Druga League . In the promotion relegation one then failed, however. In the cup competition, the club surprisingly reached the semi-finals. Despite these successes, Verdenik left Interblock in June 2011.
