Robert Sara (born June 9, 1946 in Oberlainsitz , Lower Austria ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .
Career
The trained car mechanic played 55 international matches for the Austrian national soccer team and is now a coach at FK Austria Wien , one of the most successful Austrian soccer clubs.
Sara spent his time as an active player at SV Donau Wien before Eduard Frühwirth brought him to FK Austria Wien in 1964 as a storming outside cover , but he did not come to the championship until the season opener 1965/66 in the home 3-1 against Schwechat on 21. August 1965 (and celebrated the anniversary of 400 championship matches on September 23, 1979 in the 6-1 victory on the Hohe Warte against Vienna).
On his national team debut on October 20, 1965, he sensationally won with Austria against England 3-2 at Wembley Stadium .
Since the European Championship qualifier on November 21, 1975 in Wrexham for exactly four years, namely until November 21, 1979 (also in a European Championship qualifier) in Lisbon , he was captain of the national team, thus also captain of the famous Córdoba team in 1978 who took seventh place at the World Cup in Argentina and defeated Germany 3-2.
He had his farewell game on May 21, 1980 in the Prater Stadium, where there was a 5-1 defeat against Argentina with its young international star Diego Maradona (who scored three goals). Sara ran onto the pitch as captain, from the 14th minute he was replaced by his club colleague Günther Pospischil as agreed .
Robert Sara scored three goals in his 55 national games.
On May 3, 1978, he was also the captain of Austria's 4-0 defeat in the Cup winners' final against Anderlecht in the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris. In 1984 the professional footballer played for a year at the Favoritner AC and then, at the age of forty, went to the then Viennese league club FKL Wimmer .
After his career as a player, Sara jumped in for 3 games as interim coach of FK Austria Wien in November 1988 and then took over the position of assistant coach, which he held until 1998, when he was again interim coach for 8 games. Since summer 2008 he was assistant coach of the amateur team of FK Austria Wien, until he moved to the post of assistant coach of the professional team at the side of Andreas Ogris in March 2015 . In mid-March 2019 Sara became a consultant in the violet offspring.
He is married and has one child. Robert Sara's younger brother Josef Sara was also a professional footballer and national player .
