St. Martin (also Sankt Martin ) is a market town with 1091 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .

geography

St. Martin is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria . The area of ​​the market town covers 49.34 square kilometers. 56.48 percent of the area is forested.

The southern part of Maißen (including Auhäuser) used to be a village. The community consists of the cadastral communities Harmanschlag, Langfeld and St. Martin.

With the Lower Austria. The municipal structure was improved on January 1st, 1971, when the Langfeld parish was incorporated into St. Martin, followed by the Harmanschlag parish a year later.

The population has been falling continuously since 1910. The decrease has been smaller in the last few decades, but the birth balance and migration balance are both negative.

economy

There are 140 agricultural and forestry businesses in St. Martin, 40 of which are full-time businesses (as of 2010). Six of the eight factories in the manufacturing sector deal with the manufacture of goods. Most of the 48 employees are also employed here. The service sector gives work to 89 people in 43 companies, mainly in the social and public services and in trade (as of 2011).

traffic

  • Rail: The Waldviertelbahn has a stop in St. Martin. The scheduled train service was discontinued in 2001, and nostalgic trains have been running ever since.
  • Bus: The market town can be reached via the VOR bus lines from Freistadt, Gmünd and Zwettl.
