Waldenstein is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 22.73 square kilometers. 25.67 percent of the area is forested.

The community consists of the cadastral communities Albrechts, Großhöhnen, Großneusiedl, Grünbach, Kleinruprechts, Waldenstein and Zehenthöf.

Waldenstein is a member municipality of the Waldviertler StadtLand region .

history

As early as the 12th century there was a small aristocratic seat on the spot.

In 1850 a separate community was formed in Waldenstein with Groß-Höhaben. In 1968 Albrechts, Groß-Neusiedl, Klein-Ruprechts, Grünbach and Zehenthöf joined the community.

In 1883 Waldenstein became a Marian pilgrimage site . On the main altar of the pilgrimage church there is a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from linden wood, 2.45 meters in size. She carries the baby Jesus, in whose shoulder there is a pick.

Population development

The population of Waldenstein has remained fairly constant since the record began in 1869. While many neighboring communities have experienced a sharp decline in the last few decades, the population in Waldenstein grew from 1961 to 2001 and is now constantly commuting around 1,200 people.

  • Catholic parish church Waldenstein hl. Michael: The church has been a pilgrimage church since 1837 with the grace statue of Mary with the hoe .
  • There is an early medieval quarry in the Venusberg corridor.
  • To the north-west of the cadastral community of Grünbach lies a medieval local mountain with a circular wall made of granite blocks.
  • The local chapels of Albrechts and Groß-Höhaben date from the 18th century, those of Groß-Neusiedl and Grünbach from the 19th century and those of Klein-Ruprechts from the beginning of the 20th century.
