Eggern is a market town with 680 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .

geography

Eggern is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 20.2 square kilometers. 36.77 percent of the area is forested.

Neighboring communities

history

Eggern was first mentioned in a document in 1230 and originally belonged to the county of Raabs-Litschau. Until 1635 Eggern was an imperial estate of its own. The church from 1792, consecrated to St. Aegidius , forms the cultural center of the place .

In 1590/91 Eggern counted 17 subordinate houses; In 1751 the place had 18 subordinate houses. From the end of the 17th century Eggern was part of the Litschau rule.
