Eggern is a market town with 680 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .
geography
Eggern is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 20.2 square kilometers. 36.77 percent of the area is forested.
Community structure
The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):
- Eggern (481) including mountains, Guggus and Niederwehr
- Reinberg-Heidenreichstein (107) including Pengers
- Reinberg-Litschau (92)
The community consists of the cadastral communities Eggern, Reinberg-Heidenreichstein and Reinberg-Litschau.

history
Eggern was first mentioned in a document in 1230 and originally belonged to the county of Raabs-Litschau. Until 1635 Eggern was an imperial estate of its own. The church from 1792, consecrated to St. Aegidius , forms the cultural center of the place .
In 1590/91 Eggern counted 17 subordinate houses; In 1751 the place had 18 subordinate houses. From the end of the 17th century Eggern was part of the Litschau rule.

The population of Eggern has been falling continuously for decades, as both the birth balance and the migration balance are negative.
