history
Kautzen was first mentioned in a document in 1212 (document in the Michaelbeuern monastery archive).
Kautzen served the Illmau rule (first mentioned in 1337) as the main town. A market was mentioned in 1520 and 1675. At the end of the 17th century, glass and paper manufacturers settled here. An old paper mill from this period has survived. Textile production became important in the second half of the 18th century. The Illmau internment camp existed in Illmau Castle between 1914 and 1917 , primarily for citizens of states at war with Austria-Hungary .

Individual evidence
- ↑ Statistics Austria: Population on January 1st, 2020 by locality (area status on January 1st, 2020) , ( CSV )
- ↑ The year 1112, which is often quoted, is based on the assumption that the list of tithes, which was written at the end of the 13th century, already had the same content when the St. Georgia Monastery was founded in 1112. But that was certainly not the case, as it contains place names that did not even exist at that time (e.g. Wüstung Hard near Thaya). In addition, an undated document cannot be used as the "first documentary" mention.
