Groß-Siegharts is a municipality with 2721 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district in Lower Austria .

geography

Groß-Siegharts is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 44.27 square kilometers. 39.17 percent of the area is forested.

history

Groß-Siegharts was first mentioned in a document in 1299. Johann Christoph Ferdinand Graf von Mallenthein pursued the ambitious goal of around 1720 to turn the small village belonging to his rule into a center of the textile industry. He had specialists from all over Europe come to the Waldviertel and build 180 “Fabrics-Häusl” in Groß-Siegharts. 6–10 people lived and worked there. Above all, "Bandlwaren" were produced, which were offered for sale by wandering traders, the "Bandlträger" in the countries of the Danube Monarchy. The region owes the name “Bandlkramerlandl” to these traders.

Mallenthein's ambitious industrialization plan initially failed, but it provided the impetus for a longer-term orientation of the region towards the textile industry.

In the second half of the 19th century there were 6 textile factories in Groß-Siegharts that were operated with steam power: Adensamer, Wagner, Hetzer / Silberbauer, Wolff, Zuleger and Fenzl. Around 1900 the local ribbon weaving mills employed several hundred people. Groß-Siegharts became a market town in 1727 and a town in 1928.

Blazon: In the red shield, two silver, red-tongued griffins on six silver hills , holding a green wreath and a blue gold-rimmed shield with the letters SH (Siegharts) in the silver bar and under which a green olive branch protrudes.

In 2001 there were 154 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 109 according to the 1999 survey. According to the register census of October 31, 2011, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 1233, which corresponds to a general activity rate of 47.9 percent.

The original economy consisted of the textile industry , mainly the manufacture of ribbons and cords. It was the center of the Bandlkramerlandl . Today, however, small and medium-sized enterprises still play a major role.
