Poniatowa is a city in the Powiat Opolski of the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name .

geography

The place is located in southeast Poland about ten kilometers northeast of Opole Lubelskie .

history

The town of Poniatowa was built in 1937 on the site of a village of the same name. The nucleus of the city was the tele and radio technology plant built as part of the four-year plan “ Centralny Okręg Przemysłowy ”, and in 1938 Poniatowa received a connection to the railway network from Rozalin through the construction of a branch line of the narrow-gauge Nałęczowska Kolej Dojazdowa .

During the Second World War and the German occupation , the factory premises were used as a warehouse for Soviet prisoners of war from 1941 . From 1942 it served as a labor camp for Jews , and in April 1943 alone around 15,000 Jews were deported from the Warsaw ghetto to Poniatowa. Almost all of the inmates were murdered on November 4, 1943 as part of the " harvest festival ".

After the end of the war, the plant was put back into operation from 1949 to 1952 and from then on produced parts for household appliances. In connection with this, the city expanded further north, and the plant, most recently part of the household appliance combine PREDOM, employed up to 5,000 people at times. In 1998 the plant was closed.
