geography

Karlstein an der Thaya is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria and is traversed by the German Thaya . The area of ​​the market town covers 48.86 km². 33.64 percent of the area is forested.

history

Karlstein an der Thaya was first mentioned in a document in 1112 as Chadelstain , and around 1345 as Karlstein . Name interpretation: Burg am Felsen, which is named after a man named Karl. In the 18th century the place became a center of the watch industry ( see article: Horologenland ) and before 1784 it became a market. During the First World War , the Karlstein an der Thaya internment camp was located here .

In 2010 there were 100 agricultural and forestry holdings, 51 of which were full-time farms, and these farmed three quarters of the area. The service sector employed 209 people in 63 companies, almost half of them in social and public services.
