history
Brunn was first mentioned in documents around 1230, Buchbach in the first half of the 13th century, Götzweis in 1314 and Kainraths in 1369. In 1784 Buchbach was raised to a parish.
In the course of the municipal structural reform of the state of Lower Austria, the districts and communities were commissioned from 1965 to arrange for the unification of small communities in order to only form communities with at least 1000 inhabitants for financial reasons. For the Waidhofen an der Thaya district, the state government recommended that ten communities in the Waidhofen an der Thaya area be united with the district town. After consulting with the other affected communities, the mayor of Vestenpoppen, Franz Groß, developed the proposal to merge the communities into a new community in Waidhofen an der Thaya-Land instead. After the state government had approved this plan, the founding was initiated: On January 1, 1971, the formerly independent small communities of Brunn, Buchbach, Kainraths, Nonndorf and Vestenpoppen merged after the local councils of the five small communities gave their approval in autumn 1970 had. Only Ulrichschlag, Kleineberharts and Vestenötting voluntarily joined the city of Waidhofen, while Hollenbach and Puch were forcibly added to Waidhofen because they had no common border with the other five communities.
On February 21, 2017, ice up to 25 cm thick broke up on the Thaya in the evening with a thaw after an unusually cold period. The ice floes accumulated on the bridge in the district of Vestenpoppen, water flowed over the relief channel over the state road and as flood through the village.
