Ludweis-Aigen is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria south of Raabs an der Thaya . The area of ​​the market town covers 51.18 square kilometers. 30.31 percent of the area is forested.

The eponymous district of Ludweis was first mentioned in 1242, Aigen as early as 1122. The district of Ludweis-Aigen that was mentioned earliest in a document is Liebenberg in 1112.

Ludweis was raised to the market in 1363. Aigen was a center of the Reformation in the 16th century .
