geography

Waldkirchen an der Thaya is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 42.72 square kilometers. 31.46% of the area is forested. The Zlabingsbach flows through the community and flows into the Deutsche Thaya a little south .

In Fratres there is a border crossing to Zlabings in the Czech Republic .

history

Waldkirchen was first mentioned in a document in 1188 and raised to a market town in 1928.

Population development

Since 1934 the population has been decreasing. In the last few decades, both the birth balance and the migration balance have been negative.

  • The parish church of Waldkirchen to St. Martin is essentially Romanesque and was redesigned in the Baroque era . Its tower was built between 1713 and 1715.
  • The ossuary southeast of the church was built in 1773.
  • At the Waldkirchen cemetery there is a memorial for the Sudeten German expellees from Iglau for 25 small children who died of starvation in the expulsion on June 21, 1945, as well as a memorial plaque for the war dead of Iglau.
  • Gilgenberg Castle is a late Renaissance building and dates back to an earlier festival.

  • Train: Waldkirchen is located on the Thayatalbahn , which originally ran from Schwarzenau via Waidhofen to Slavonice (Zlabings). The railway line was discontinued in 2010.
  • Bicycle: A cycle path was built on the former embankment of the Thayatalbahn .

There is a kindergarten and an elementary school in Waldkirchen.
