Vitis is a market town with 2655 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district in Lower Austria .
geography
Vitis is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria and is traversed by the German Thaya . The area of the market town covers 55.51 square kilometers. 23.58 percent of the area is forested.

history
Vitis was first mentioned in 1150 as Vitisse . Etymologically, a Slavic personal name similar to BytišƄ can be assumed .
From the end of the 16th century and until the first half of the 17th century, the place was a Protestant stronghold. The market, which was first documented in 1462, was one of the most important markets in the Waldviertel in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Population development
After a slight decrease in the population in the 20th century, it has been increasing again since 1991. If the migration balance was negative until 2001 , it is now positive , as is the birth balance.

Culture and sights
- Catholic parish church Vitis hl. Bartholomäus: The church is essentially a Romanesque building with Gothic pointed arched windows and ribbed vaults. The high altar dates from 1732.

economy
In 2010 there were 153 agricultural and forestry holdings, 77 of which were full-time farms. In the production sector, 29 companies employed 371 people, mainly in the manufacture of goods (288) but also in construction (90). The service sector employed 740 people in 117 companies, over half of them in trade.
