The starting point was the Kürnbachhaus, built in 1664 and opened as a local museum in 1968. In 1968 the idea was also born to open an open-air museum from the surrounding area of the Kürnbachhaus. In the course of the first construction phase, which lasted until 1985, old Upper Swabian farmhouses were moved to Kürnbach. A second construction phase followed until 1993, when 14 more buildings were moved to Kürnbach.

The museum village now comprises 32 buildings from six centuries. Characteristic is the type of old Upper Swabian farmhouse, four of which are in the museum (Hueb, Kürnbachhaus, Laternser and Voggenhaus). The hallmarks of these thatched single-roof houses are the smoke outlet through the roof, wooden plank walls , the threshing floor in the middle of the house and a roof ridge supported by continuous ridge columns or crossed timbers. In addition, a number of residential and farm buildings of peasant origin can be visited, which differ structurally from the old Upper Swabian farmhouse (Unterer Bauhof and Bendelshof). With the Wolfer house from 1499, the museum village has one of the oldest preserved houses in rural Upper Swabia. The Oberschwäbisches Trachtenmuseum (Upper Swabian Costume Museum) has been housed in the so-called "Tanzhaus" since 2000 and shows the festive clothing of Upper Swabia and Allgäu from the period between 1750 and 1850. A town hall, a chapel, a bakery, a historic bowling alley, a tower transformer station, a forge and a warehouse can also be seen on the site.

The numerous collections and exhibition units in the houses deal with fruit growing, electrification and handicrafts. The latter area includes workshops that were taken over and document the work of Upper Swabian saddlers , cooper , tailors , flaschers , violin makers , as well as shoe, clapboard, brush and basket makers. A hair salon and parts of a butcher's shop can also be seen by the visitor.

In addition, around 200 old apple varieties are cultivated and thus preserved on the museum's own meadows. On the grounds of the open-air museum, in addition to the Hagmann distillery , in which alcohol can be distilled at certain events, a 1,100-meter-long real steam miniature train with many narrow-gauge locomotives (5, 7¼ and 10¼ inches) and models is being built by the Swabian Railway Association founded in Ochsenhausen in 1975 operated by vehicles that were used on the Württemberg narrow-gauge railways.

Museum education

An extensive program enables adults and children to explore the museum village. In addition to holiday programs for the children, there are themed tours for adults and craft courses. A constantly growing museum educational program for schools and kindergartens on a wide variety of topics is also offered.

Events, advice

In the course of the fruit growing exhibition, advice on fruit growing and horticulture is offered in the museum village; These include, among other things, fruit tree pruning and processing courses.

Other major events are:

  • The annual steam festival that has been taking place for over 10 years
  • Great craftsman day
