history
Regional rural open-air museums have been set up in Baden-Württemberg since the 1960s. Seven regional open-air museums have emerged over the decades. Each of the museums was assigned certain regions of the country as a catchment area, whose rural history and culture they document. Together they represent the historical building and everyday culture of the rural area in Baden-Württemberg. The state of Baden-Württemberg is funding the costs of realizing historical buildings with considerable funds. Around 170 buildings from six centuries can be viewed in the seven museum villages (as of 2014). In addition, the diversity of rural life from yesteryear is shown with themed tours, museum festivals and handicraft demonstrations. Over 600,000 visitors a year make the regional open-air museums popular excursion destinations in the country.
