history

Population development

The place name Eschenau was first recorded on May 9, 1389 in the town register of Waidhofen an der Thaya , when a "Stephlein dem Eschenawr" was called. The place name is derived from a meadow overgrown with ash trees.

At the end of the 16th century, Eschenau belonged to half of Meier's rule, the second half was owned by Grünau. While the local authority was in the hands of Grünau, Meires held the regional court authority. In the course of the abolition of the manorial rule in 1848, Eschenau was raised to an independent municipality, with the village of Grafenschlag being added to the municipality . With a law of March 28, 1927, Grafenschlag and Eschenau were separated again. Eschenau and Grafenschlag were only added to the market town of Vitis on January 1, 1970 in the course of a forced consolidation of the municipalities.

In 1928 Eschenau still had an innkeeper, a tailor and a blacksmith, but in the second half of the 20th century Eschenau was affected by a massive loss of population. The number of houses in Eschenau, however, has remained almost unchanged for centuries. At the end of the 16th century the place comprised 22 houses, until 1900 the village only grew to 27 houses. In 1951 there were 25 houses in Eschenau, in 2000 there were 29 houses.

In the political field, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) dominates the election results, analogous to the municipal level. The ÖVP in the electoral district of Eschenau achieved 80% (community result: 70%) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) 20% (community result: 30%) in the 2010 local council election . In 2005 public transport had reached 71%.

Buildings

The village of Eschenau is a longitudinal tangle village with garden areas, which mainly includes three and four-sided courtyards with partially simple plastered facades. The local chapel was consecrated to St. Anna between 1853 and November 6, 1854 by Dean Mathias Peter from Heidenreichstein . The chapel is a simple building with arched windows, a retracted apse and gable tower, which has an onion helmet between the gable slopes. A square vault rises above the two-bay chapel over belt arches . The altar sheet shows Mary's teaching, a baroque picture shows the mercy seat . In addition, the chapel has a baroque carved figure ( Man of Sorrows ) and a box crib. In addition to the chapel, there is also a path chapel on the road to Grünau, which dates from the 19th century.
