Belt arches under barrel vaults

The belt arch is a brick arch of a vault - usually made of larger stones and wedge stones - which divides or closes the vault transversely. It often rests on wall templates such as wall pillars , half-columns and others. It initially serves to support and structure the barrel vault . From the 10th century, the first attempts had been made to vault churches in this way. In later times the function of the belt arches predominated as an optical structuring element. They divide the vaults into individual yokes .
