history

Population development

The place name Kleinschönau was first mentioned in documents in 1380, when Duke Albrecht III. the brothers "Hans vnd Ott, the Toppler" gave the "Vest ze Hirspach". In the document two parts of the Zehent "ze Hirspach, ze dem Stölzleins, ze Schonnaw and ze Lobniz" were mentioned, which is the first time that Kleinschönau is known as "Schonnaw". The place name itself is a descriptive place name that means "near the beautiful Au".

Kleinschönau originally belonged to the Hirschbach lordship, which held the land, village and regional courts. However, in 1455 Hans Topler temporarily sold the village to Michael von Herwartenhouen. At the beginning of the 16th century, the place Schönau or parts of it should have been temporarily deserted, since in 1514 tens of seven desolate fiefdoms were notarized in the village due to legal disputes. After the death of Count Franz Sigmund von Herberstein, his wife sold the Hirschbach estate with Kleinschönau and Kleingloms in 1755 to the owner of Kirchberg am Walde, Count Julius Veterani von Mallenthein. Kleinschönau and Kleingloms remained part of the lordship of Kirchberg am Walde until the land authority was abolished.

Kleinschönau originally belonged to the Sallingstadt parish, but was parish off to Großglobnitz after the turmoil of the Reformation. In 1758 Kleinschönau finally came to the parish of Hirschbach. The chapel, built in 1835/1836, originally only served to pray the rosary and was not consecrated until 1862.

The size of the place remained almost unchanged for centuries, there were still 10 houses in 1590/91, the number of houses rose to 15 houses by 1796. After that, however, the size of the town hardly changed, in 2000 Kleinschönau consisted of 16 houses.

In the political field, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) dominates the election results, analogous to the municipal level. The ÖVP in the Kleinschönau electoral district achieved 80% (community result: 70%) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) 20% (community result: 30%) in the 2010 local council election . In 2005 the ÖVP had only achieved 67%.

Kleinschönau was built as a longitudinal tangle village, with the unspoilt pasture having a cross street. The single-storey construction of the village consists predominantly of three and four-sided courtyards, house no. 5 (marked with the year 1882) was provided with a stucco medallion. The local chapel is a simple building with a semicircular apse, roof turrets with stucco decoration and an onion helmet. The interior is adorned with a late Baroque crucifix and figures of Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine, both from the first half of the 19th century. The chapel shrine at the southern exit of the village also dates from the first half of the 19th century.
