Gastern is a market town with 1194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district in Lower Austria .
geography
Gastern is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria; the next larger towns are Heidenreichstein and Waidhofen an der Thaya . The area of the market town covers 24.97 square kilometers. 20.57% of the area is forested.

history
Gastern is named after Garsten Abbey in Upper Austria, which was first mentioned in 1177. In 1931 the place was raised to the market. Between 1954 and 1957 the future pastor of Traunstein Josef Elter , known as the “sculptor pastor ”, worked as a chaplain in Gastern and Dobersberg.
Population development
The population has been falling steadily for a hundred years. In the last few decades the main reason for this is the negative balance of migration , the birth balance is only slightly negative.

economy
There are 78 agricultural and forestry holdings in Gastern, 29 of which are full-time businesses. These cultivate two thirds of the agricultural area (as of 2010). In the manufacturing sector, fifteen factories employ 175 people, mainly in the manufacture of goods and in construction. In the service sector, 84 people work in 36 companies (as of 2011).
