history
In the cadastral communities of Oberthumeritz and Unterthumeritz, finds from the Neolithic period were made.
The name is derived from Kyriapanz, which contains the Old High German word “panz” or “ponz”, which means Gau or fiefdom. The place name therefore indicates a church district or a church loan. The parish of Japons was probably established before 1148, the first documented mention of Japons comes from the year 1336, when the place Chinjapons was mentioned. The first written mention of the cadastral community of Zettenreith dates back to the same year. A castle was mentioned in Unterthumeritz in 1386. Around 1620, Japons was badly affected by the Thirty Years War .
Thumeritz marble was extracted in several quarries south of Unterthumeritz in the 19th and early 20th centuries .

With the decision of the Lower Austrian provincial government of July 18, 1978, the municipality of Japons was awarded a municipal coat of arms. His blazon : “Divided and split at the top, a golden, fire-breathing panther growing out of the shield section in black, top left two black upright scythes in gold, below three times from green to red.” The community colors are green-yellow-black.
