Johann Jakob Zeiller or Zeiler (* July 8, 1708 in Reutte , Tyrol , † July 8, 1783 ibid) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Johann Jakob Zeiller was taught by his father Paul Zeiller (1658–1738) at the Reutten panel painting school as a boy . In 1723 he began his apprenticeship with Sebastiano Conca in Rome and then from 1729 to 1732 with Francesco Solimena in Naples. From there, Johann Jakob Zeiller moved directly to Vienna, where he worked as an employee of Paul Troger from 1733 up to and including 1743 . In addition, Zeiller purposefully attended the art academy in Vienna, only to achieve the coveted title of imperial court painter. With this privilege, obtained in 1737, he was able to work free of all trade tax, with as many assistants as necessary, not only in the kk hereditary countries, but also in the "Reich".

Through the mediation of Paul Troger, whose manner Zeiller mastered, he received the first major order to fresco the newly built Cistercian monastery church in Fürstenzell. His great empathy for the specific tasks of monumental decorative painting is shown u. a. in what is probably the largest baroque dome fresco (approx. 1300 m²) above the rotunda of the Ettal monastery church: In the most extreme form of the illusionistic scheme, it completely negates the dome shell and, with its immeasurable expanse, represents a highlight in the entire ceiling painting of the 18th century. In terms of room design consistency and progressiveness, Zeiller's dome solutions from the 1760s have almost nothing comparable. They clearly mark the last stages of baroque ceiling painting, which are otherwise difficult to understand given the variety of contrasting phenomena in this later phase. Zeiller uses the contradiction to emphasize the ambivalence of these forms and types in the interplay between illusionism and imagery. A masterpiece of artistic design is the choir fresco in Elbigenalp in the type of the one-sided, oblique underside of the earth shaft ceiling or dome in oblique projection. It is an exemplary example of baroque ceiling painting at the end of this epoch, which has exhausted all possibilities and is on the verge of deciding to abandon its traditional principles.

The fresco painter, who mainly worked in southern Germany, moved to Reutte around 1755. There Zeiller took over his father's workshop, in which his brother-in-law Balthasar Riepp had previously worked.

Zeiller's work is largely limited to sacred painting. He was mainly a fresco painter and also executed numerous panel paintings (altar leaves, portraits) in oil on canvas.
