Balthasar Riepp
Balthasar Riepp (born November 22, 1703 in Kempten ; † August 2, 1764 in Vils ) was a painter.
Life
Balthasar Riepp was born as the son of Michael Riepp (servant at the royal residence in Kempten) and Maria Mayr in the monastery town of Kempten. Prince Abbot Rupert von Bodman made it possible for him to receive basic training from the court painter Franz Benedikt Hermann in Kempten. His teaching and assistant time with Jacob Carl Stauder (1694–1756) was followed by a two-year study trip through Italy in 1725, which was financed for him by the Kempten collegiate capital Anselm Reichlin von Meldegg (appointed prince abbot in 1728).
In 1728, Riepp had the opportunity to work in Paul Zeiller's productive painting workshop in Reutte . In 1735, by marrying the eldest daughter of the master, Maria Anna Zeiller, he became a member of the highly respected family of artists, to which Johann Jakob Zeiller and Franz Anton Zeiller belong. With his spirited painting style, Riepp soon acquired the reputation of a famous and sought-after artist, who also enabled a total of five students to complete their basic training.
Shortly after Reutte was granted citizenship in 1740, his only child, Johann Anton Laurentius, died. From this point onwards, his alcoholism increased , which subsequently led to the separation from his wife and to a change of residence required by “public morals”. The social decline and his generosity towards the needy led him into complete impoverishment. The gifted artist died in his emergency shelter in the city of Vils. Balthasar Riepp was a cousin of the organ builder Karl Joseph Riepp .
