Sebastiano Conca , also called "Il Cavaliere" (born January 8, 1680 in Gaeta , † September 1, 1764 in Naples ) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque .

Life

Sebastiano Conca was the oldest of ten children of the merchant and tax farmer Erasmo Conca and his wife Caterina de Lorio. When he was young, his father sent him to the workshop of Francesco Solimena (1657–1747) in Naples. In 1702 Conca accompanied his master to Montecassino . During his training he acquired Solimena's strongly contrasting painting style.

In 1706 Conca went to Rome with his brother Giovanni Conca and founded his own workshop for fresco painting and panel paintings , whereby his painting style developed further in the direction of a classical late baroque. This art style, also known as Roman classicism , had developed as a countermovement to the frivolous Rococo and, through the rediscovery of Roman antiquity, brought a classically oriented artistic aesthetic into discussion.

In 1710 he founded the "Accademia del Nudo", which was attended by numerous students from all over Europe, who in turn spread the classicist approach across the continent. In 1719 Conca became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and was twice elected its princeps. One of his early patrons was the Principe della Torrella and Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni , who, in addition to numerous other offices, was also archpriest of the Lateran Basilica . Through Ottoboni's intercession, Conca received from Pope Clement XI. commissioned to paint frescoes in San Giovanni in Laterano and in San Clemente. As a reward, he received an accolade from the Pope and a cross set with diamonds. His studio now became the great room in the Palazzo Farnese , which was given to him by the Duke of Parma .

During this early period he also worked with Carlo Maratta in Santa Cecilia in Trastevere and in 1718 alone in Genoa in the Palazzo Lomellini-Doria. 1721–1725 he was called to Turin to the House of Savoy , where he created frescoes and oil paintings in various churches and in the royal palace. He later received commissions from Philip V (Spain) , the kings of Poland, Portugal and Sardinia, and the Archbishop of Cologne.

In 1731 a commission followed in Siena to paint the apse of the Santissima Annunziata. The order fulfilled the last will of Ugolino Billo, who was previously rector of the Sienese Santa Maria della Scala . In 1739 he wrote a book called Ammonimenti ("Admonitions"), a kind of moral guide for budding artists.

In 1751 he finally returned to Naples, where he turned artistically to an illusionist painting in the manner of Luca Giordano .
