history

Via Appia in Minturnae

Minturnae

The ancient Minturnae belonged to the five-city confederation of the Aurunker , the Pentapolis Aurunca . 314 BC BC Ausona , Vescia and Miturnae were destroyed by the Romans. With the construction of the Via Appia from 312 BC The city began to rise again. 296 BC BC Minturno became a Roman colony. The city was surrounded by a wall and a castrum was built. Minturno had a large forum, many temples, thermal baths, a theater and an amphitheater. 88 BC BC Gaius Marius managed to escape from Sulla with the help of citizens from Minturnae to embark for Africa. In ancient times, Minturnae was known for the excellent quality of its crabs. Athenaeus reports that the gourmet Marcus Gavius Apicius stayed in Minturnae mainly because of these crabs.

Traetto

Minturnae was believed to have been destroyed by the Saracens between 580 and 590 AD . The surviving residents founded the fortified village of Traiectum on a nearby, more easily defended hill . But even this was destroyed in 883 by the Saracens, who founded a base at a not yet precisely localized place at the mouth of the Garigliano. Only with the Battle of Garigliano (915) could they be driven out of central Italy again.

Traetto , as the place was now called, came under the rule of Montecassino . After the Norman conquest , it became part of the county of Gaeta under the Caetani . In 1503 the French defeated the Spaniards in the second battle of the Garigliano. Prospero Colonna , who had fought on the side of the French, got the Duchy of Traetto. From 1690 to 1806 the Carafa were the masters of Traetto. After that it was directly part of the Kingdom of Naples .

Minturno

In 1861 Traetto became part of the Terra del Lavoro Province of the Kingdom of Italy , until the newly founded Province of Latina in 1934 . In 1879, Traetto was renamed Minturno again.
