Luigi Giura (born October 14, 1795 in Maschito , † October 1, 1864 in Naples ) was an Italian engineer and architect .

He was an inspector in the engineering group for bridges and roads ("Corpo Ponti e Strade") in the civil service of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . He became famous for the construction of suspension bridges . The Real Ferdinando sul Garigliano bridge in Minturno over the Garigliano River (1832) was the first iron suspension bridge in continental Europe .

Live and act

Giura first attended schools in Maschito and then the seminary in Melfi . He then studied bridge and road construction in Naples, where he graduated in 1814. He then entered the civil service as a bridge and road construction engineer and undertook study trips to France and Great Britain to learn about the latest technology.

The first chain suspension bridge in continental Europe, the Real Ferdinando Bridge , was designed and constructed by Giura and built from 1828 to 1832. In 1943 the bridge was partially destroyed by the German Wehrmacht . In 1998 it was rebuilt.

Giura died on October 1, 1864 in Naples and was buried in the Poggioreale cemetery. The grave is there in the so-called quadrato degli uomini illustri ("Karee for celebrities").
