Real Ferdinando Bridge

The Real Ferdinando Bridge or Ponte Real Ferdinando sul Garigliano (locally also called ponte borbonico - Bourbon bridge -) is a chain bridge near Minturno over the Garigliano river , which forms the border between the regions of Campania ( Caserta province ) and Lazio ( Province of Latina ) forms. It is the first chain bridge in Italy .

It is only separated from the site of ancient Minturnae by a road and is fenced in like it. About 20 m above the Real Ferdinando Bridge is a modern road bridge that leads the Strada Statale Via Appia (SS7) over the river and another 250 m upstream is the cable-stayed bridge of the motorway-like SS 7 quater .

The Real Ferdinando Bridge was designed by Luigi Giura and built from 1828 to 1832 in what was then the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . It is named after the Bourbon King Ferdinand II .

In 1943 the bridge was partially destroyed by the German Wehrmacht . In 1998 it was rebuilt with EU funds.
