The Poggioreale Cemetery ( cimitero di Poggioreale ) is the largest cemetery in Naples , Italy . It is located on the southern slope of the hill of Poggioreale in the district of the same name .

history

The cemetery was built on the grounds of the Summer Palace Poggio Reale, under Charles II. Built and Alfonso II. In the style of the Renaissance was rebuilt. Its whip system, into which the first nymphaeum after antiquity was built, was remarkable . The castle fell into disrepair in the second half of the 17th century. The cemetery was built on the site in the second half of the 18th century. It was expanded over time, around 1836. This expansion was officially inaugurated in 1837.

With an area of ​​50 hectares, the cemetery is one of the largest in Europe . The southwest corner of the cemetery is reserved for Neapolitan celebrities and is known as the Quadrilatero degli Uomini illustri (celebrity square). There is a neoclassical style church on the site.
