Poggioreale is the 16th of the 30 districts ( Quartieri ) of the southern Italian port city of Naples . It belongs to the eastern periphery of Naples .

The Poggioreale district, together with the districts of San Lorenzo , Vicaria and Zona Industriale, forms an administrative unit, the Municipalità IV of Naples.

Geography and demography

Poggioreale begins east of the historic center of Naples, is 4.45 square kilometers and had 29,243 inhabitants in 2009 (together with the barely inhabited district Zona Industriale ). The main train station is in the south of the district , but it is already part of the Zona Industriale . The street Via Nuova Poggioreale passes through the entire district (although they do accept several different names).

Places and buildings worth mentioning

Centro Direzionale

The Centro Direzionale is the largest office and business center in Naples. However, there are also some residential buildings among the numerous high-rise buildings. It was built in the 1980s and 1990s according to plans by the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange .

Poggioreale prison

Alongside the Centro Penitenziario di Secondigliano , the Poggioreale prison is the second major prison in Naples. It was built between 1905 and 1914 and is - due to the fact that famous mafia bosses like Raffaele Cutolo were imprisoned here - one of the most famous Italian prisons ever.

In Poggioreale is the largest and most famous cemetery in Naples, the Cimitero di Poggioreale . Enrico Caruso and Totò are buried here among many other celebrities . The cemetery was built on the grounds of the Summer Palace Poggio Reale, the first under Charles II. Built and Alfonso II. In the style of the Renaissance was rebuilt. Its whip system, in which the first nymphaeum was created after antiquity , was remarkable . The castle fell into disrepair in the second half of the 17th century. The cemetery was built on the site.
